I didn't make the connection until today's morning coffee that I had bought the Chicago & Earth, Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre DVD at Target, which was in the midst of a holiday ad campaign with EWF. It was funny how The Wife and I watched the DVD and all of a sudden noticed all this EWF music on TV.

Of course, she cheered when she saw Verdine on TV again, and who wouldn't?

You can actually view this and two other commercials (featuring the songs "Let's Groove" and a December version of the song "September") here (You'll need Flash to view). There're interview clips, too.

Hm...now I know there's a commercial out there with the song "Star" in it. It's not on the Target site, so maybe it's for something else.

The Wife and I were discussing the possibility of having "the talk" about sex and drugs with any future children, the one that all parents have sooner or later. I'm not looking forward to it, but then again, do I really want my children ending up like me?

Because this looked like fun...
If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.

It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you.
Two things to keep in mind:

(a) I am married and my wife reads this. I'm not saying you can't post what you want. I'm saying that if it gets me thrown out of the house, I'm tracking you down and taking over your couch.

(b) I tend to delete what I like at whim, anway. Like Casanova Frankenstein in Mystery Men, I even kill my own posts.

Since Mushtaq tagged me...

Seven Things I Will Do Before I Die
  • Have a child
  • Write and publish a book
  • Find a way to get my black sash (i.e. permission to teach) in my old kung fu system.
  • Complete my list of all the similarities between the techniques and principles of my old system and those I've learned studying FMA and dabbling in silat.
  • Have enough martial arts knowledge to pass on to my child. Because few things are scarier than a Filipino descendant with a stick being asked "What system do you know?" and answering "Just some stuff I learned from the old man."
  • Go to the Philippines and find an old GM to have at least one lesson. If none are living by the time I get to it, I'll settle for a first generation student.
  • Finally learn how to play the jazz standard "Joyspring" on my trumpet. It's been a decade, and I still haven't mastered it.
Seven Things I Can Do
  • Learn just about any skill if I'm apprenticed to the right person. I tell myself, "If I can learn kung fu, I can learn this..."
  • Listen. Even now, the mental health counseling bug hasn't completely been eradicated from my system.
  • Generally see the "big picture" or the general principles of a given thing, without necessarily needing every last detail.
  • Hum along with the horn licks of every Chicago song from any album, all the way back to Chicago Transit Authority.
  • Take care of my wife (I know I can do this, 'cos she told me so).
  • Hang out comfortably with and feel accepted by lower-middle-class Appalachians in the morning, and rich, Liberal, semi-elitist snobs in the evening. It's all about how you listen to and talk with people.
  • Stay calmer than average in a crisis situation. One of the lasting benefits of working in Residential Treatment.
Seven Things I Can't Do
  • Stomach even a hint of the Filipino cultural "I'll-scratch-your-back-and-you're-an-ashsole-if-you-don't-scratch-mine" mentality. This is a bad thing, really, because I know I've actively avoided relationships with some people because of it. I have to work on that.
  • Even think of the possibility of ever moving back to Euclid, OH.
  • Play any tune done by Dizzy Gillespie or Charlie Parker (except for "Scrapple from the Apple" and bits of "Ornithology")
  • Own a firearm (at least if I want to stay married)
  • Address a Catholic nun any differently than I did in grade school, even ones closer to my age
  • Transition cleanly back and forth between "right side" hubud into the "left side."
  • Resist chicken wings
Seven Things I Say Most Often
  • Whaaaaaaaat?
  • Oh, no he/she didn't!
  • [I've got/she'll get/he knows/you deserve/I owe you/etc.] two things: jack and $hit.
  • Gotta put the game face on, baby.
  • [What'd I get you for your birthday/for lunch/etc.] Twice as much as I got you last time.
  • [In response to feeling screwed with] Motherfcuker's got the wrong one, today.
  • Told you that btich crazy.
Seven People I Would Like To Pass This On To

You know how I am about spamming people ;), so I'll just open it up to the first seven people who want to do this either as a comment or on their own blogs (and leave a comment telling us all where to find it).

One of my favorite games from childhood was to see two pictures side by side and have to spot the differences between the two. I got quite good at it, too.

Now, as an adult, I get to do the same thing, thanks to Glen Feron's The Art of Retouching site (via Neil Gaiman). Now, I get to click on models' photos, mouse over them and see what they looked like before they were Photoshopped.

Well, I've got some time before the Diamond Mines, so I'm at "That Place" and finally getting a good download speed for the latest Who episode, "Father's Day."

If you need to kill time as I did last night, here's something: An interview with Bill Champlin on Mick Martin's Blues Party, heard on Sacramento's KXJZ.

The Acerbic Wit of Comic Commentator Lewis Black

Fresh Air from WHYY, April 7, 2005
Do I really need to copy and paste the synopsis?

Tuesday, March 08, 2005

I never, ever do these, but I make an exception today, a) because of the respectability of the source and b) because the questions are pretty interesting.

Mushtaq Ali asks:

1. What is the best thing about being American?

The best thing has to be the quality of life. Even though no one used these exact words, the one thing that's been subtly communicated to me all of my life by my parents and relatives is that for everything that might be wrong with this country, the standard of living is still unmatched, at least compared to the Philippines. Why else do upper middle class families with 2.5 servants per household put up with the shock of emigration and discovering that they have to do their own laundry? That's not a stereotype -- I have names and numbers if you don't believe me.

My father will be the first to tell you about everything that's wrong with this country. If he likes you, he may tell you all the problems he's experienced financially, culturally, and interpersonally. He'll also tell you that compared to being in the Bataan Death March and living under Japanese occupation, and everything else between then and Marcos' martial law, it hasn't been that bad over here.

2. Twenty years from now, what is one thing that is still delighting you about your soon-to-be- wife?

That's an easy one - we will no doubt still be relishing in obscure and arcane references from various cult sci-fi/fantasy, music, anime, etc. Twenty years from now, we will still gape at something weird and crack up, saying, "It is... Bizarrrrrooooo!"

3. You have just received round trip tickets for two to anywhere in the world, where do you go, who do you take with you?

In general, it's safe to say "somewhere in Asia." If E has any say, it will be Tibet or Korea. If I have any say, it will be the Philippines. We would also be going for the same general purpose, namely to connect with our deep interests at the places where these interests have their origins. In E's case, it will be her love of Korean culture or to deepen her experience of Tibetan Buddhism. For me, well... "*Clak* *Clak* Ow, my tender American hands!"

4. The time machine is finally working, you get to spend a day with any one person in history, who will it be?

Louis Armstrong. This is no joke, I want a trumpet lesson with Louis Armstrong. If it was a 24 hour session, so much the better. Heck, I wouldn't even have to play anything myself - just sit there with a tape recorder and ask him playing questions. His was the first "musical genius" that I ever connected with.

5. What section do you visit first in the bookstore?

Lately, I've noticed that I've been going to the magazine racks first to look at some literary journals, maybe the sci-fi magazines, and then the martial arts magazines where I spend the most time (big surprise). I used to head first to the "Sports" books, but I've noticed over the past couple of years that all the FMA books have all but disappeared (not a big deal, since I have about 5/6 of the ones available through your general retail outlets).

T-minus 21 days to wedded bliss!

***

[Note to new instant gratification readers, and I know I've picked up a few since my blog was linked by The Traceless Warrior: It may seem odd to most that my posts on such subjects as my martial arts training, my pop-culture interests, and other (sometimes, rather insignificant) miscellanea are rather in-depth, while important and significant life events are downplayed and get little, if any, mention. This isn't so much about a fanaticism about privacy as much as the fact that after 2+ years of blogging, I still haven't navigated my way fully around a certain gray area, that is, the boundary between wanting to maintain privacy, and wanting this blog to be a relevant record of my life.]
