I really, really didn't want people over last night. Of course, I changed my mind and my feelings about it as soon as they got there. It was fun as always! But, I'll tell you, after these past few weeks at the Diamond Mines (for a variety of reasons), I've been needing a place to hide and recover every day. Even my usual haunts were useless, between the holiday shopping season and finals week at the Big Red School on the Hill.

It taught me a lesson, though. One of our guests was a man I've been envious of lately. He keeps a strangle-hold on his sleep schedule. Although I'd probably never be able to keep his hours (Bed by 8 and up by 3:30), I liked how he handled things when it was time for him to go....

What...you thought I learned something about balance or somesuch?

The problem with what that writer proposes is that it is excruciating to only focus on one thing at a time WHEN YOU HAVE TWENTY THINGS CONSTANTLY BEARING DOWN ON YOU. Achieving balance IS doing exactly that - only focusing on one thing at a time. Maybe for him it meant multi-tasking, and certainly from the feminist movement the idea of multi-tasking was meant to empower women. Instead it's taken the culture by storm and we're now all supposed to be able to have babies, feed, clothe, teach and nurture them, have full careers, be sexy for our mates, pursue creative outlets for self-expression and oh yeah, of course, stay skinny. From that, now, EVERYONE including men are supposed to be able to accomplish all of that and more, and it's no longer just a lifestyle choice: how many couples can live on one income these days?

I think the better question is this: WHAT IS IT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE? Instead of trying to do everything, admit you can't do it all and pick the things you want to focus on. AND WHEN YOU ARE DOING THOSE THINGS, ENJOY THEM. AND WHEN YOU ARE DONE DOING THOSE THINGS, DON'T BITCH ABOUT HOW YOU JUST WASTED 3 HOURS OF YOUR LIFE YOU'LL NEVER GET BACK TO DO ALL THE OTHER THINGS YOU FEEL YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING INSTEAD.

Make the choices in life you need to make, live with them, be happy with them. If you don't think they are as important as they used to be, make other choices.

I'm done wit'ya.

Trouble is, time's a zero-sum game. I could enjoy the three hours immensely--doesn't change that I've got to make it up later on. That's what I bitch about ;).

I've long since accepted that there's no way I can do it all. That's the point of my kvetching.

Wow! We all know Don's a recluse. We also know life sucks :(

Let's all hang in there.

P.S. Would it kill you to call? (in best mom-whine-tone)
